Spoiler Alert: There are references to Kristin Hannah’s book Firefly Lane. It’s a good book and one I recommend, but I’ll be discussing parts of it in my post. If you haven’t read the book yet and want to, skip this post for now and come back after you’ve read it.

I haven’t read any of Kristin Hannah’s books before, even though I’ve had The Nightingale sitting on my bookshelf for about two years now. I’ve been meaning to read it, but then life happened. Cancer diagnosis, pandemic, cancer in a pandemic. You get my drift. I didn’t have the emotional bandwidth to read something that would suck me in or require me to feel more than surface emotions. So I stuck to easy beach reads that made me laugh, something formulaic, or something I’ve read so often I could easily recite it or fall asleep listening to the audiobook and not miss anything. (Thank you, J.K. Rowling, for bringing me a little magic during one of the most challenging times of my life.)

I picked up Kristin Hannah’s Firefly Lane and went all in. I read the blurb, liked what I saw, but was unprepared for the ending when the author dropped the Big C onto one of the characters. As a recent breast cancer patient, I felt a rollercoaster of emotions while reading about someone else’s cancer journey.
